Breast cancer as a young woman and mother.

About Me.

Hi I am Gemma, Mum of 2, writer and triple negative breast cancer survivor.
I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2019. I was 35 years old, and my daughter was 6 months old. My world fell out from under me.
I underwent a year of gruelling treatment; neoadjuvant chemotherapy, lumpectomy with lymph node clearance, radiotherapy and a course of oral chemo to finish off. Treatment was tough, but it worked well and my prognosis was good.
After that I was in remission for 3 and a half years. I lived with the ever present fear of recurrence, as most survivors do. But I found peace and even went on to have a baby boy. Life was sweet.
Then in October of 2023 I was diagnosed with a local recurrence, and so again I find myself in the midst of this messy, unfair fight. I have just had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, and am waiting to begin another 6 months of chemo.
It has been almost 5 years since the day I first heard the words "you have cancer". In that time I have learned a lot, and know that there are many more lessons to come. I created this blog in between my diagnoses to share information and connect with others that are facing this. To offer reassurance and validation from someone that has been there and done it...twice!
I am so sorry if you have found yourself here, but look forwards to sharing this journey with you.
